It is hard to envision, but back in the day, farmers would deliver their eggs to customers in specialty egg crates, often by mail. This particular model was designed to hold 72 (six dozen) eggs, which would be nestled into the patented holders for the eggs to protect them during transit.
This is fantastic! A wonderful early 1900s Egg Crate made by the Owosso Manufacturing Company of Owosso, Michigan. This egg crate is in vintage condition. It has one of the the original cardboard inserts -the crate can hold up to six dozen fresh eggs, 36 per level. The crate is made of all wood with a removable sliding lid. The crate is 100% original and is pure vintage with some light stains on the wood and cardboard, but remember it is over 110 years old. The original wood is in great shape and the graphics are completely legible. The top HUMPTY DUMPTY is a little bit faded but legible
Not only are the graphics great- but the box is solid- sturdy- the top closes with a sliding top
Imprinted on one of the wood sides of the egg carriers is Reg US Pat Off “Humpty Dumpty” Made by Owosso Mfg. Co. Owosso Mich.
The wood bail handle is affixed to the top of the box solidly.
The carrier has the perfect patina of a well-traveled crate. Yet, its original lettering is still legible. Nothing is broken.
It measures 11 1/2” x 13” x 13”
These treasures of farming history are becoming increasingly rare, especially in quality vintage condition. The exterior of the egg carrier has not been cleaned or altered in any fashion and a light hand of waxing would really bring it to life.
Established in 1884 the Owosso Tool Company is featured at The National Museum of American History for the fine wood furniture and farm equipment. The Owosso MFG CO had two plants the Owosso, Michigan plant which manufactured farm tools and hardware and the Benton, Arkansas which manufactured furniture.
