Vintage 1900's Unused Halloween Postcard- Vegetables
This is a Silly Vintage 1900's Halloween Postcard depicting Sweetheart Vegetables/Cabbages with Bats flying about.
The Years from 1900-1918 are known to collectors as the "Golden Age of Postcards" and during this period, people sent postcards for any occasion , including Halloween!!
For early twentieth-century romantics the harvest garden was especially ripe with fortune-telling symbolism. Of all the mystical properties found in the bounty Cabbage was sought out by revelers keen to learn about their future mates.
Mimicking an ancient Scottish tradition known as "pos (pull) the stalks" intrepid romantics walked hand-in-hand to the vegetable patch at night and with eyes shut picked the very first cabbage they encountered.
The ease or difficulty by which the root was released foretold the degree of effort it would take to win one's heart.
They were then assessed- full green head equalled attractive young mate, Closed White stalk equaled an elderly or stingy spouse, dirt clinging to roots indicated wealth, clean roots poverty. The shape -stout or lanky, bold or graceful was taken to represent the mate's build.

This card measures 3 x 5 No rips or tears only mild rubbing on bottom and upper right corners and is unused.
