Antique Cast Iron Flowers in a Basket Door Stop

Sorry, this item has sold.

This antique cast iron door stop with it's original paint has a rubbed patina due to age and use.
The white basket is brimming over with white daisies, blue forget me nots and topped with a blue bow.
On the back there is inscribed a number 71 but no other markings that I could see.
It measures 6 1/4" tall, 4 1/4" wide and 1 3/4" diameter.
Perfect for a collector, a shabby chic home or the entryway to your garden!

Before there were true doorstops, anything heavy enough to prop a door open ranging from rocks to wedge-shaped blocks of wood sufficed. By the late 1700s, however, many homes utilized round, decorative examples made of sand-cast brass, or other types of metal with flat, hollow backs,
Doorstops have been made in all types of designs. The earliest doorstops known were used in Europe in the 17th century. The vast majority of the doorstops sold today are cast iron and were made from about 1890 to 1930. Most of them are shaped like people, animals, flowers, or ships.

Similar doorstops weren’t widely used in American homes until after the Civil War, and these examples were generally smaller and lighter in weight. They didn’t come into their own in the United States until the 1920s, however, and they remained very popular through the early 1940s when heavy metal rationing began during World War II. They were purchased very inexpensively, sometimes with coordinating door knockers or bookends, in gift shops, and even through mail order catalogs.
Be aware that most doorstops will fall short of “mint” condition. They were made to be used in homes, and the paint invariably chipped as a result. When they fell out of favor as decorative accessories, many were banished to barns and garages where they deteriorated even further.
